Wii U Controller Doesn't Control Black Ops 2 Very Well

So I've been getting kinda tired of Call of Duty these days. I've played every game on the 360 except I think COD 1&3 (I do have those games though). I'm decent at COD although I'm no Herculean demi-god (or am I?). But let's just put it this way, after playing 6 Call of Duty games, I can at least find my way around the controller.

So yes, I said I was bored with COD, so I got Black Ops 2 for Wii U, thinking the novelty of the new system and a new community might reignite my interest in the series. Maybe there would be less assholes on the Nintendo servers? So I'm about 30 minutes into the campaign and suddenly I've realized that this game SUCKS. The graphics look awesome, don't get me wrong, worthy of anything on the PS3 or 360. But once I thought about it, it wasn't the GAME that sucked... it was the controller layout!

I wonder whether its an asethetic peculiar to the Japanese that made them say "Ok, we need to line up the two sticks, even though on every other system and controller, even our OWN, the right stick and buttons are in the REVERSE positions!" I didn't even really think about this until I put Black Ops 2 in. I quickly found myself in the role of being a new player because the position of the right stick on the Wii U game pad has been exchanged for buttons! Many times while I was playing the first few missions on the gamepad I would find my right thumb reaching for where the stick would be on the 360 only to find empty air.

Actually, even the PS3 Controller has the 360 layout of right stick and buttons. EVEN NINTENDO itself used this layout on earlier controllers for the Wii. I have the classic and pro controllers from my Wii, so I thought I would be able to use one of these on the Wii U. You CAN use them but the problem is you cannot "click" the sticks on the Wii controllers. What an incredible blunder by Nintendo! Even my knock-off Gamestop Playstation 2 controller has a click function on the sticks! This layout is a system breaker for anyone interested in crossing over to the Wii U from the PS3 and 360.

Why do I say it's an incredible blunder, maybe even a system breaker? Because I am going to trade in my Wii U version of Call of Duty Black Ops 2 for the 360 version. I will never again try a series on the Wii U that is available on the 360 or PS3. Yes, simply over a controller. I have worked hard to gain what feeble skills I have on COD. I am not going to throw all that away by learning a whole new layout on the Wii U. Same goes for all the other ports like Mass Effect, Battlefield, etc. I feel that Nintendo has simply said "fuck you" to gamers like me. Just because they wanted to align their sticks. So say goodbye to a lot of my money Nintendo. Surely you don't think I am the only one that will experience this frustration. There's probably thousands, if not MILLIONS, of gamers that will come to the same conclusion. Because of a controller. Sadly, even the Wii U "Pro" controller has the same stupid stick alignment as the gamepad.

What were they THINKING? Did Nintendo not want gamers to cross over from 360 and PS3 to the Wii U? Again, this might be a system breaker. I guess as long as a game doesn't require me to click with the sticks, I'll be able to use my Wii Pro. I guess one thing in the defense of the gamepad is that the triggers feel awesome. I feel like I'm actually shooting a gun when I press them because the gamepad is a bit heavier than the traditional controllers and the rumble feels even more realistic. But that's not enough. I shouldn't feel like a newborn child when I play COD. Yes, I asked for a new experience, but not one that would detract from the gaming skills I have worked hard to acquire. Come out with a controller with right stick placement like the 360 or PS3 and I'm back on board. Until then, count me out on any other ports.

  1. The 'stupid' analog stick placement is more ergonomic than the current right stick location. This is because moving the camera in modern games is a higher priority function than pressing the face buttons, and the face button location on xbox360/ps3 is where your thumb naturally rests, so your right thumb is at an angle for most of gameplay.

Curious, but do you have a problem with Microsoft placing the left stick where they do also?
